The French Phonics & Foundations Blog
Welcome to Growing Great Readers – French Phonics & Foundations. This blog is where I will share the research, insights, and practical wisdom that shape my Super Science of Reading program.
I recently completed my coursework for my Master of Education in Language & Literacy, a journey that deepened my understanding of structured literacy, bilingualism, French Immersion pedagogy, and how children learn to read. Here, I break down that learning in clear, accessible, teacher-friendly ways—always connecting research to real classroom practice.
My goal is to support FI educators with evidence-based strategies that build strong, confident, joyful readers, and to make the science behind literacy instruction both usable and inspiring.

The Science of Reading has become something of a buzzword — but what does it actually mean? It’s often associated mainly with phonics, yet the research on learning to read is far broader and touches every part of literacy instruction. If we say our practice is “research-based,” then it’s worth asking: What does the research really say?
Here, I’ve tried to offer a clear, accessible overview of some of the most important concepts shaping effective reading instruction — especially in bilingual and French Immersion settings. While this research is what my Super SOR Program is based on, understanding the principles behind effective literacy instruction will support your teaching no matter what materials or programs you use.
Ultimately, teaching is both a science and an art. My hope is that learning about the research helps you strengthen your professional judgement, adapt instruction to meet the needs of your learners, and feel confident making informed decisions about literacy instruction in your FI classroom.
