Reading Research

The Science of Reading has become something of a buzzword — but what does it actually mean? It’s often associated mainly with phonics, yet the research on learning to read is far broader and touches every part of literacy instruction. If we say our practice is “research-based,” then it’s worth asking: What does the research really say?

Here, I’ve tried to offer a clear, accessible overview of some of the most important concepts shaping effective reading instruction — especially in bilingual and French Immersion settings. While this research is what my Super SOR Program is based on, understanding the principles behind effective literacy instruction will support your teaching no matter what materials or programs you use.

Ultimately, teaching is both a science and an art. My hope is that learning about the research helps you strengthen your professional judgement, adapt instruction to meet the needs of your learners, and feel confident making informed decisions about literacy instruction in your FI classroom.
